Question Massive lag/delay opening programs, folders etc.

I have a Lenovo desktop as a backup gaming rig. i5-4690s 8Gb ram win10 gtx 1050. It used to run just fine, but recently has started to be incredibly slow to respond to just about any activity. Click to open windows explorer, firefox etc and it might open 30-60 seconds later when that used to be almost instant. It's becoming almost unusable its operating so slowly. Checked with CPU Z and all the clock speeds and whatnot seem normal. Haven't changed any hardware or OS settings . Anyone have any idea what could be going on here or how to get it back to normal speed?

You're leaving out what kind of hard drive or SSD you have. Have you tried monitoring Task Manager when opening folder or programs?

Sorry im not as up to speed on what components my computer has as I should be. I do know that it is a mechanical drive and not a SSD. I have not tried to monitor task manager, I will check that and see if i can find the culprit.
