I am needing to purchase a new external HDD for my iMac. I have recently upgraded to Mavericks OS and bought a Toshiba HDD. When I tried to use it I get an error message saying that it is not compatible with Mavericks OS. So is there a specifc external HDD that I need to buy? I really need this soon. I am not understanding why this OS update is not "jiving" with external HDDs. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Solution
The Toshiba drive is formatted for use on a PC. You can format the drive to make it compatible with a Mac. Click on Launchpad, Click on Other, Click on Disk Utility, find the drive on the list to the left, select the drive, click on erase, you will want to select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) to format the drive. If you plan on sharing the drive between a Mac and a PC then you should choose exFAT.
