I upgraded a very old Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255 laptop for someone who doesn't need a lot of computing power nor can afford to buy anything else. Surprisingly, I was able to install Windows 7 Pro; the computer has 1GB RAM and a 40GB hard drive. I found specs on the laptop that says that 1GB (2 x 512MB) is the most RAM that can be installed. I was wondering if that is truly a system limitation or whether 1GB RAM sticks were not available when the laptop was built and maybe it can use them. I don't have a pair of 1GB RAM sticks to try and I did not want to purchase them if the laptop really cannot use them. I figured more RAM would be a cheap way to give the laptop a bit more speed. Thanks!

This is really old. It uses DDR (no number). So looks like 1GB is an upgrade fro stuck. This is straight from Toshiba, and I would not really trust anyone else. Not to mention, I doubt you can find 2GB DDR sticks..if you can, it is probably a bit pricey.

512MB expandable to 1024MB; SODIMM expansion memory

128/256/512MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM, 2.5V

Herc08,

Thanks for the reply. I had previously found Toshiba's specs so I know they only recommend 1GB max. My question is if this is a true maximum due to system limitations or whether 1GB sticks were not available at the time so they were not included in the recommendation. By the way, I am not looking for 2GB sticks; I was thinking about getting two 1GB sticks as I suspect that this would be the max if indeed the laptop can accept them. I know they exist - I saw them on eBay. Thanks!

I found out that the laptop has the Intel i845PE chipset. I looked up the specs online and saw that this chipset could handle up to 2GB PC2700 RAM. I put 2 1GB sticks in the laptop and it recognized the full 2GB. I also ran CPU-Z to see what speed the RAM was running at and it was running at 333 MHz.
