Discussion MAX PAYNE 1 and 2 Remake announced, will use in-house Northlight engine !

Some more breaking news. Some of you might have just read this today itself on several gaming websites as well.

Anyways, Remedy Entertainment has just announced that it will remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne games in a new development agreement with Rockstar Games. Remedy will develop the games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S using its proprietary Northlight engine. The game’s development budget will be financed by Rockstar Games, the size of which will be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production.

Let’s hope that Remedy will keep Max’s iconic face for the first Max Payne game. Since we’re talking about a remake, a “classic” face model should be possible. Let’s also hope that Max Payne 2 will retain its amazing ragdoll physics.

Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games, said:

“We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.”

Remedy CEO, Tero Virtala, added:

“Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know the millions of fans worldwide feel the same. We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.”

The relationship between Remedy and Rockstar Games dates back to the original release of the critically acclaimed Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne games, developed by Remedy and published by Rockstar Games. Both games left an indelible mark in popular culture, lauded for their neo-noir atmosphere, groundbreaking storytelling and “bullet-time” gunplay.

Under the development agreement signed today, Remedy will develop the games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S using its proprietary Northlight game engine. The game’s development budget will be financed by Rockstar Games, the size of which will be in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production. Under the agreement, Remedy has a royalty opportunity after Rockstar Games has recouped its development, marketing, and other costs for distributing and publishing the game.

The project is currently in the concept development stage. The press release notes that the game is in the "concept development" stage, meaning that the remakes of these two classic games aren't likely to be launching anytime soon. Alan Wake 2 also currently lacks a release date, though Remedy has committed to a release window of 2023.

In the meantime, the Max Payne games were made backward compatible on Xbox consoles in 2021 as part of the final push to add games in Microsoft's backward compatibility program.

I really liked the Bullet Time mechanics in this game though.
I'm hoping since these are remakes, that they give them some of the features Max Payne 3 had, like the realistic way Max would carry weapons, including having to put down the two handed ones when he performed certain functions that required two hands. It was not only realistic, but made you think more about what weapons to use, and where to reacquire another two handed one.

As much as I dislike some of the things Rockstar have done with GTA lately, I really love what they did with Max Payne 3. It was above and beyond my expectations in fact.

BTW, which Max Payne title is actually the best in this whole franchise ? Yeah MP3 featured realistic gameplay, but what about 1 and 2 ? Since I jumped directly into MP3, the story and the gameplay was very new to me, but I presume the story is slightly intertwined as well ? Because I have never played 1 and 2 before.

There are actually conflicting and contradictory opinions and views given by gamers/websites on the web, with regards to this franchise. But for the most part MP3 was an all time favorite of many, with MP1 taking the second spot.

Yeah, like I said, MP3 is my favorite too. What a lot of people didn't like about 3 is Max is sorta written as a drunk who's lost his way. Aside from the many cutscene's showing him slipping into the abyss with a bottle though, the gameplay is nothing like that. He takes control when need be. There's a few quips Paulo makes at him, and he offers up some good lines too humor wise, but it's not all self ridicule like some make it out to be.

Like I said though, even though I didn't like MP 1 & 2 quite as much, with some modern graphics touches and remaking a few features, they could end up being very close to MP 3. So I'm very excited for these remakes, and can't wait to play them, or even see the progress as they develop it. Hopefully they'll throw us a few juicy tid bits while we wait for their release. I'm sure they will, as it usually results in more preorders.
