max Safe 9800Pro Voltage?

Hey, Thought I'd actually post in the right section for a change.

I've voltmodded my card recently, but have no idea what a 'safe' voltage would be. It's currently at 1.9V, but that makes DoomIII very nearly artifact-free @ 450 on the core (so everything else <i>is</i> artifact-free.)

Any ideas what a 'safe' voltage would be? I've looked around and I saw an article where the guy used 1.94V, but he was using a waterblock and I'm only on air (although pretty good air).

Obviously I'd like to stick a Vapochill on it and stick 2V or more through it, but if I kill it then I'll have to go back to a Geforce2 Ultra, and I sooooo don't want that to happen!

Replace your 80mm with two 60mm. You'll need to remove the plastic cover to do that tho.

There's two reasons to <i>not</i> do this:
<b>1)</b> Noise. the 80mm is reasonably quiet. My Pc is in my bedroom, and I usually leave it on overnight folding/downloading stuff. 2x60mm fans would be a tad noisy methinks.. :smile:

<b>2)</b> Airflow. The current setup blows the air straight out the back of the case, so it doesn't add to temps therein. Removing all the plastic and adding 2 smaller fans would definitely screw that up.

Anyhoo, might shoot for around 1.95V I think. I had doom III going (at 450Mhz), with snow all over the screen, whilst I was slowly turning up the V on the card, watching the snow go away with each adjustment of the VR :lol: ... when I checked the V it was at 1.92V or so, but that was almost artifact-free then. (in Doom), but I was concerned over that much V so I backed it down to ~1.88V.

Highest artifact-free OC in DoomIII is what I'm after. I reckon 450-460 is where I'll end up.

So, you couldn't get the core any higher with the Volt mod? If you got 475 on stock :frown:

I suspect the 475Mhz on stock voltage was so full of artifacts it was like a museum :lol:

Just a quick update...

Well, I've been running at 1.94V for a couple of days now with no problems (450/350). That's the level required for artifact-free DoomIII at those speeds. I only need around 1.88V for it to be artifact-free in 3dmark03's 'Nature' game benchy (which is the one I've noticed is more prone to artifacts - lots of shaders going on with the distortion in the water I guess)

Problem is, I have no idea whether I'll hit minor overheating issues first if I try for more, or if my core will just go 'pop' and die :evil: .

The HS is quite hot to the touch, but still not as hot as the pathetic stock cooler used to get, on stock Voltage. (1.69V)

I can Vmod my r350 radeon to about 1.92 just fine with VGA silencers and run doom3 at about 481, anymore makes the core burn too hot for the game. Did about 2.16 with a peilter installed abd got 505 stable on the core running doom 3 but stopped that fast since that was really too much work for the GPU to do sensibly.

Well, I've shoved an 80mm fan on my silencer so it has considerably better airflow than a stock one.

Hmm... might try for 2V and see how much further I can push it. Was that doom @ 481 free of artifacts? Good example (of a core) if so - I start getting artifacts @ 1.94V if I go any faster than 450Mhz (but they don't get to the point where they really interfere until near 460 or so - 450 is clean)

BTW, mine's a 360 core too (but the one time I tried the BIOS flash to XT it was terrible)

Can hold my finger on there for as long as I like, but it's definitely a fair bit warmer than the XP-120 on my CPU, which is generally low-mid 40s C (folding Load, as per usual).

I have no problems with any games at the current settings (haven't upped the Vcore from 1.94 yet)

OK, I chickened out at 1.99V.

Now 460Mhz, with a couple of <i>very</i> minor artifacts in DoomIII. You get about 3 red pixels when he brings the torch up. Basically, if you weren't actually looking really close for them, you wouldn't notice.

I can still leave my finger on the HS for as long as I like, but it's definitely getting near my pain tolerance. I suspect it would prove too hot for many other body parts :wink: .

Now just wait and see if it explodes I guess 😱 .

Ran fine last night, but briefly fired up DoomIII this morning to check for overheating (all fans switched down to 5V overnight), and there were a lot of artifacts straight off. Switched the fans back up to 12, and they slowly started dissipating, but I could only hang around for a couple of minutes. I'll check if it's all back to normal later on (possibly pop home at lunchtime). Fairly sure It'll be ok though.

Maybe I should rig up a dedicated water cooler for my GPU? :evil: If I did <i>that</i> then I'd shoot for 2.1V or above. hehe.

I'm soooooo gonna blow this card up soon. :lol:

Simple: pump nearly 2V through it! It ran fine for a while at that setting.... then yesterday morning when I got up and wiggled the mouse to bring the monitor back to life, it just stayed dead :frown: ...

I turned the PC off, turned it back on and got BEEEEEP..beepbeepbeep. Which I've always recognised as a graphics card error. I quickly opened it up, checked it was seated properly, tried a few resets... still screwed. So I removed the damn thing and brought it into work and tried it in another PC here, and that <i>also</i> gave the 'graphics problem' beep code.

So the fact two different PCs seem to think it's dead, <i>plus</i> I just happened to be pushing waaay more V through it than Ati would be happy with I think killed it.

I'm sure there's a lesson to be learned here somewhere.. damned if I know what it is though :wink:

Now, where's the voltmod guides for 6800GTs? :evil: It's a BIOS flash rather than a physical mod isn't it? :lol:
