Maximum Resolution of Intel® HD Graphics 520 on external monitor?

I'm thinking of purchasing a laptop with a Intel® HD Graphics 520 graphics card on a computer with an "FHD AG (1920 x 1080)" display. My question is, if I connect this to an external monitor capable of higher resolutions, is this graphics card capable of creating higher resolution images? Is there a maximum resolution?

Thanks!

Games have a lot to process graphically compared to showing a movie. And yeah they sure didn't make that "Quick" to read as it says. While the intel graphics might be capable of going up to 4k...

Thanks! I don't play video games I just watch movies... is there a difference between the highest achievable resolution for video games vs. movies?

Edit: thanks for the link... honestly the guide goes a bit over my head.

While the intel graphics might be capable of going up to 4k resolution I believe if your monitor is only capable up to 1080p then if might limit you to that. And 1080p will be perfect for movies.

Absolutely - a video does not have to be recomputed @ each frame while a video game has to be (because it's interactive) - so a movie is just 30 or so images / second which is WAY less work to display than a video game. Which means as long as your monitor resolution is supported you will also be fine with movies. The only exception might be some old crappy windows playback software... but you probably know VLC / smplayer etc. ;)

I have a slightly similar question. I do no gaming at all, just watch hi-res videos, and hope to watch 4K videos too. I can get the XPS 13 with intel 520 for £300 cheaper than the XPS 13 with the new iris intel 540. I only need to do multitasking, websites, watch videos, and open and read large PDFs. Would it be silly of me to spend the extra money just for the iris graphics? I.e. will I even make use of it if I get it or will I miss it if I stick with the 520?
