Maximus VIII Hero lights up, but no fans, no POST no other power.

Hello all, My assumption here is that I have fried my motherboard or CPU, I just can't figure out which - and maybe (hopefully) I am wrong.

My system has been running fine for about 2 years-ish until the other day when I plugged my phone into the USB port. Then I heard a "click" and the system shut down immediately, all power dead. Would not turn back on.

The system is hooked up to a UPS and Surge protected, and I've never had issues with my power in the 4 years I've lived here.

I have a Maximus VIII Hero MB, and a 750w power supply ( Yes I know it is overkill, I had planned on adding a few more video cards, for rendering, but never got around to it).

I've gone through the standard troubleshooting list, but that seems to be geared more to first time builds, where this build has been functioning fine for years.

I've already replaced the PS with a known brand new working PS, and no change. I've already pulled the board from the case, and only have the CPU, fan, and a single RAM installed - no change.

The start, reset and mood lighting on the board come on, but nothing else powers or spins. CMOS clear seems to work and turn off lighting until I let go, but again nothing happens.

If there is some info I am missing here, please let me know, otherwise looking for the next step to determine issue. Thanks!

Unfortunately if all cables and connections are OK and PSU is OK. No Qcode at startup? then the MB is definitely suspect. A faulty CPU would give a Qcode 00. Consult with your MB manual for location of fault LEDs. You can get a copy of your manual here: https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/MAXIMUS-VIII-HERO/HelpDesk_Manual/

If flashing the Bios proves unsuccessful then RMA the Motherboard if still under warranty. (3years)
Hi El Sergio :)

It seems your system will now not POST so what does your Qcode readout say?

The MB also has a series of LEDs, for Dram, CPU, VGA and Boot device. If any of these remain lit during post then post will not advance till the error is rectified.
Why your phone being plugged into a port would cause this is unusual however check the above first.

Just in case there is Bios corruption, clear CMOS and update to latest version and best done via Flashback button using USB port on the rear IO panel. This way you only need power to the MB and do not need to enter Bios.

Hey MeanMachine41

Thanks for the response. I was trying to make sure I got everything in and I knew I would forget something. Qcode is not lit- no readout. , Not sure where the LED's are for the Dram, CPU, VGA and Boot device are. There are 10 LEDs on the bottom I assume are "ambiance". I do not see any other LED's on the board bresides under the start, restart, and the logo. I will have to try and find my docs for the MB to see where they are at - but I assume if I am not finding them with the MB powered on, they are probably not lit?

I agree with the phone thing VERY weird. Phone is find, so could just be coincidence. I will have to try the the Bios update tomorrow. Since there was no POST, and no Qcode, that is what was leading me to believe it may have been the CPU, in which case, it won't even get to Bios potentially - is that correct?

I will have more info to update tomorrow with the attempted Bios update. Thanks again for your help!

Thanks for your help. I assumed that was going to be the case. I am pretty sure I am only at 2 years, so hopefully no issues.
