I just built my new computer and the motherboard is getting really hot during games. In a game like The Witcher 3, temps on the motherboard and the CPU shot up to 90 degrees. In a low demand games like The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth, the temp on the CPU was fine, but the motherboard rose to 60 degrees. These feels really dangerous to me, here is the list of my parts:

CPU: Intel 6700k with heatsink cooler
GPU: Nvidia 980Ti ACX 2.0+
Mobo: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII RANGER LGA 1151 Intel Z170
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series DDR4 2666
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced
PSU: 850W

I really don't want to melt the board so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Ambient temps appear to be good for both, they are hovering around 30 with no load. There is a fan on the front, side, top, and rear, as well as the CPU fan on the heatsink. Cables are out of the way. Is it possible the sensors are off for some reason? The GPU doesn't rise that high.

They do. I'm starting to suspect a faulty sensor. Hwmonitor has a big difference between the cpu heat and the cputin. I don't know if this issue is common on motherboards or if there is a fix though?

Also to be safe I ordered the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo just to provide a better cooling solution.

I did update to the latest drivers on both. One thing I did as well was lowered the maximum processor performance to 99%. I didn't see any performance issues with The Witcher after doing so and saw a big decrease in heat. So I don't know if it's just the game or not. One of the downsides to grabbing this new processor and new motherboard is there isn't a lot of user info out there, and what there is varies wildly.

Left myself wide open there, and it's hard to answer, as I said I've been 'playing' with it, thus far I've run 3 sets of DRAM in it and in different configs, been playing with a variety of of GPUs (mainly 780, 980 and 290X in both single and dual (SLI and XFire), and with a variety of CPUs coolers ( i.e. CM GTS V8, 212 EVO, Cryorig H7, Seidon 120, Lepa Aquachanger 240 and the EXllusion) no real problem with temps on any, haven't OCed over 4.3 yet as using AS for the thermal compound and not really giving it time to cure. 😉

I turned the state back to 100% and decided to turn Turbo Boost off in the BIOS. After turning off turbo and seeing no dip in performance on The Witcher 3, temps are noticeably cooler as well. After the same amount of time that produced those higher temps, my motherboard in two higher sectors peaked at 83, and the package of the CPU peaked at 85. I suspect that Turbo was just drawing waaaay too much power and needlessly getting hot. With the new heatsink on the way, I suspect that temps will drop even more and then will probably allow for Turbo to go back on. I will update then, and still definitely open for any other suggestions.
