Hi, Had this problem last Feb and Kenway in particular was very helpful again thanks for that. Disk is again corrupt and unreadable and I'm going to disconnect and unplug and leave overnight but what I am really looking for is somewhere to download a fix, the seacole website simply sends you round in circles and doesn't offer any solutions. so if anyone has any better ideas that would be great thank you.

disk manager shows the disk is "healthy" but also empty which I hope it isn't as many files on it and this advent computer has never accepted and CD's for backup.

Hi

Is this an external USB hard disk or an internal windows hard disk?

If usb then seagate diagnostics for windows should tell you if you have physical problems like bad sectors .

If internal boot drive then you need a Seagate bootable diagnostic disk image
To test the hard disk.
If the disk passes both short & long tests you can be fairly sure there is no physical damage

Next step is to run chkdsk which may help but do not run chkdsk if seagate diagnostics reports problems

I assumed you meant maxtor (Seagate brand) not maxstor. If not use western digital data life guard for windows for testing usb hard disk or non bootable internal drive as it does not object to other brands

Thanks Mike and I will work my way through that though Seagate just sent me round in circles last time.

The hard drive in question is external with a USB connection to the computer.

Thanks again.

Still working on this, local computer guru who is a good guy, has helped me before, says that he can send the drive away and if they can fix it is going to be £300 plus postage, PC World want £80 if they fix it, neither will charge for an unsuccessful fix. local computer guy said that as there are no noises coming from the unit he thinks the problem is not mechanical. The other alternative is to buy Seacole software.

The attempted fixes I have tried so far have got me to the point where it gives the option of reformatting but I can't go beyond that as that scrubs out everything on the drive. Do you have any advice as to what you would do, and thanks again for the help !
