i have a maxtor 1 tb external hard disk. i have nearly 600 gb of data on it... i hav been using this hard disk for nearly 4-5 years...suddenly last night when i connected my hard disk on my account in my computer. i was unable to access it... it showed that my drive has turned ntfs..and showd 0 memory. when i opened my brothers account on my system and connected it, it worked normal...why is this happening and what are its causes. and how to change the drive from ntfs to normal earlier one... plz help... i hav 600 gb of data on it and i dont want to lose it at any cost... and yes i use windows 7 professional OS.

Hey there, shoeb4uf.

This behavior is far from normal. If it used to work properly before, have you asked if your brother knows something about this? If there were any unusual sounds/noises, or if he'd installed anything or changed the ownership in some way?
For now I'd suggest that you backup everything important you might have on that drive, just to be on the safe side. After that go ahead and download an HDD diagnostic tool to test the drive and see what's the situation with it. You could also try the HDD with a different USB cable (not longer than 12") and a different computer, to see if the same thing happens.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Thanks.... but then i might have to buy another hard disk to backup my 600+ Gb og data....
We did not change the ownership...we just used to download movies and store in it... and juste use it to watch it back...
mostly we stored our pics film mp3 files on it....we just used to watch movies....nothing more than that...

but as i mentioned above, we didnt do anything, just watch the movies from the hard disk and nothing else. we dont do anything with the access rights. we just use our movies, thats it..

Important data has to be kept on at least 2 different totally independent drives; otherwise if the drive fails, then that data is lost forever. I'm still convinced there's nothing wrong with the drive and it couldn't change from exFAT to NTFS by itself, but taking ownership is a rather easy step.

Well i went to the properties section and saw the ownership it said nothing about changing anything

If you click properties, security tab, advanced button, you can see the permissions. Click the owner tab to see who the current owner is (you, ThustedInstaller, etc.) On that screen you could change the owner, but I'd start by making sure your account has enough permissions before changing the owner; I wouldn't change it if TrustedInstaller is the owner; I'd instead fix the permissions.
