Which is better? a maxtor model# 2f040L0 or a maxtor model # 5t030h3. I don't know much about cylinders and heads. i just need to whats better performance wise

According to the following documents, the 5T030H3 has a capacity of 30.7GB spread over 2 platters and three heads. That's 10GB per head.

The 2F040L0 has a capacity of 40GB and only 1 head.

The 2F040L0 spins at 5400 RPM, whereas the 5T030H3 spins at 7200 RPM.

The fact that the 40GB drive has four times the data density of the 30GB drive would give it twice the data rate at the same RPM, all other things being equal. However, because it spins slower, its data rate would be reduced by a factor of 5400/7200 = 0.75.

So I would expect that the maximum transfer rate of the 40GB drive would be approximately 1.5 times faster.

In fact HD Tune's results page lists a max transfer rate of 46MB/sec for the 2F040L0 and 37MB/sec for the 5T030H3:
