So what's the verdict? I'm looking at the 7200RPM versions of the Maxtor 740DX and the Western Digital Caviar 800BB.

Their performance differences seem negligible, both are available for the same price, and I've had nothing but good experiences with both - so what do you guys think? The Maxtor or the WD?

Id go with the WD drive, esp if your willing to shell out the extra 20$ for the 8meg special edition!

Both of these are very good drives, but the Special Edition Western Digital makes me lean towards their direction.

Since you specified the "BB" WD and not the "JB" special edition with 8MB cache, I would have to recommend the Maxtor - especially if it is the "quiet drive" version.

If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I wouldn't have thought so much.
