[SOLVED] Maxtor manager download for mac

I have an iMac (24" Early 2008), and a Maxtor OneTouch 4 external backup drive. It is still under Warranty: Expiration is 12-Mar-2014.

Last week I ran avast!'s free anti virus, and it told me there are infected files in archive 1 in Volumes/Maxtor B:U. I don't know how to go about getting at and removing these infected files from the Maxtor OneTouch4. (I disconnected the Maxtor, (Power & USB).

It had been backing up automatically to Time Machine (I think?), but maybe only to the Maxtor? I don't even know how I would transfer all data on the Maxtor to my iMac HD if the need ever arises.

I would like to clear everything and start from scratch, but I don't know how, and I can't find any instructions how to do this. I found an internet page: "How can I erase my OneTouch 4 and start over?" It says I can use the Maxtor Manager to erase the drive, and follow these steps: 1. Open the Maxtor Manager. I CAN'T EVEN FIND THE MAXTOR MANAGER!

When I hooked up the Maxtor (Power & USB), the icon does not appear on the desktop!

I clicked on the (grayed out) Time Machine icon, and it says Time Machine not Configured.

I don't even know if Time Machine depends on the Maxtor backup, or is Time Machine just in my HD in my iMac, on its own?

No doubt you can tell, I'm LOST.

I need "step by step" help please. Thanks! pdm

Plug the drive in and wait 15 seconds for the computer to detect it. Click on Spotlight (the little magnifying glass in the upper right hand side of your screen. Type in 'disk utility' without the quotes and click on the top result.

Look for the Maxtor drive on the left hand side and click once on it. Make absolutely sure you don't accidentally choose your internal hard drive, as this could end badly if you do.

Click on the Erase tab and though this next part will vary depending on what version of Mac OS you are running, you'll need to basically wipe the drive clean. After that, you should be able to go into System Preferences > Time Machine and set up the newly erased external drive to use as your backup drive.

Time Machine will only back up on to an external or network drive and never onto your iMac's internal hard drive. Hope this helps!

Thanks benji720. Since I had this problem, I can't remember what I did, but everything's working properly now. The Maxtor icon is on my desktop, and it is backing up.

Heaven forbid, if my hard drive ever does go kerplunk (sp?), I wouldn't know how to use Time Machine to re-enter everything back into it.

Guess I'll just wait until that happens.

In the meantime, whatever virus avast found, I'll just leave on the Maxtor, because I don't want to go into it, nor erase it and start over.

Someone else commented earlier, to get rid of avast which I did. I now have Clam Xav installed, and presumably it's working OK.
