I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling all the software and it wants me to format. I have about 400 gigs of stuff and don't want to lose it. This has movies, music, books, and photos of my late husband's art that I don't have anywhere else. Is there a way to get around the need to format in order to get this drive recognized? It isn't showing up in my disk manager at all. Or should I just go back to Windows Vista? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
If you dont want to lose those files then they should never be stored on just 1 device. Storing important files on multiple devices is the only way to survive a when a device fails.
If the drive still works then your first job is to make another copy of these important files. I suggest making at least 2 more copies and storing them in different locations.

Solution
Have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus external 750GB drive, i ran a Backup onto it before upgrading 7Pro to Windows10....and also ran a Safety Drill copy. Once Windows 10 was rolling on my machine, all i get is the Maxtor Manager giving a mixture of "unknown" and missing/greyed out options in the Manager. Windows Disk Management does NOT show the drive. Windows Device Manager shows an entry for Maxtor Personal Storage Security with a sub-feature of Maxtor OneTouch (which has a successful driver installed for the usb drive). So it's a mix-match of having some of the management software present, but no drive listed (although you can right-click and Eject the OneTouch drive from Windows SysTray....!). Confusion. Perhaps down the road this drive will be given some drivers attention from Microsoft (or a similar driver that is compatible w/ this unit from Seagate).
