Question Maxtor & Seagate drives, used as APV's not recognised by Windows

I have a Maxtor4 and a Seagate external drive which for some time I have used as APV's to record TV. Deciding to revert to original purpose I find that Windows will not recognise them. Is there any way I can reformat them for Windows?
I appreciate any help but my 85 year brain doesn't take well to tech-jargon so please keep it simple! Thank you!

Can you see the HDDs in Disk Management? If so, then initialise and format them.

The Seagate one was visible, I have initialised and formatted that one. It is now usable.
The Maxtor is visible in Device Manager/Disk drives but not when I access Disk Management/Partitions.
