Mbps, Confusion and Questions!

Hello, everyone. How is your day and evening. I have a question about Mbps and the internet provider Xfinity. Time Warner cable charges $49.99 a month for Up to 20Mbps and 20+ channels.. I am pretty sure that is what my Mom has currently. My Download is 20Mbps and Upload is 2Mbps. If we go with Xfinity for $54.99/mo for 75Mbps and 45+ channels. Would internet improve. Or am I wrong about what my Mom has. I dont understand how this works. If it says I can get up to 75Mbps does that mean I will.

Well, you'll get better speeds, but it'll depend on the website/resource you're trying to access (I.e. downloading something from a destination that has low upload speed will prevent you from getting the full 75 Mbps), but since you're not in IT, the short answer is yes! Better speeds

Edit: make sure that your Mom actually has 20 Mbps because if she already has 75Mbps, switching plans won't increase speeds.

Do you know a plan to stream on websites like twitch in 1080p and 60FPS. Like up to 75mbps or up to 100Mbps, Etc etc.

The data on twitch is highly compressed which is why there is a delay of close to 15 seconds between the live and what you really see. You can see what it used in the network tab of the event monitor, you likely will see something between 3 and 6m depending on how compressible the feed is. 1080 and 60 frames means very little when they display the same frame multiple times.

Even netflix running 4k movies need only 25m again because the data is compressed. Only thing that might use huge bandwidth would be a live stream at 4k where they could not use much compression.

Pretty much the only reason to have huge bandwidth is you have lots of people sharing the connection or you take risks running torrent to download not so legal content.

Well, since I'm in Canada, I couldn't suggest a plan as it wouldn't exist in your country (assuming the US). Truthfully, if only two people are using the bandwidth, 20mbps would be enough.

If you wanted more speeds for things like torrenting/hosting then 75mbps would also be good.

TLDR: your current speed would be enough for 1080 streams (assuming your ISP meets its SLA), but 75mbps would be awesome!
