I went to the Dell site and down loaded the upgarde help software. It
told me the stuff I had
BIOS A06
Network Driver 3COM 3C920
Audio Driver GamePort for Creative SB Live
Audio Driver Creative SB Live Value WDM
Video Driver NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400

I was then directed back to the Dell site for a list of files to down
load. None of hte files listed matched the stuff above. So, is it
fair to assume that I don't need to get new drivers?

If I plan on doing a clean install, I assume that I'll need drivers
from somewhere if they aren't on the XP disk. The process is poorly
documented in my opinion.

If Dell does not support Windows XP for this particular
computer, then there will not be any XP drivers or files
from Dell for it. And assuming that Windows XP will be
installed from Microsoft Windows XP retail cdrom, then
the situation would be no different from that of the home
builder. Depending on the age of the peripheral devices,
their drivers might be on the Windows XP cdrom. If not,
then visit their websites and download from there.

Bill;
Also see the Upgrade Advisor, #3 on this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/default.mspx

Do not assume because none were listed you do not need updated
drivers.
That may mean Dell does not have any.

You don't mention what model Dell you have or how much RAM, etc., but
I'd go out on a limb and say you won't have any problem getting drivers
for the above listed components.

In that case, go for it. I did an 8100 for a friend a while back with no
issues at all. I did note in your original post you're planning on a
clean install. You won't be disappointed. In fact, originally, they did
it as an upgrade and the machine was a dog until I blew it out and redid
it as a clean install.

I've owned two D8100 machines -- still own one. It's running XP flawlessly.
Clean install is the ONLY way to go.
