ME upgrade hack?

First a bit of background: About a year ago, my os (win95) totally crashed. I inherited this comp from a friend who got it from his company when they upgraded their systems, so I didn't have the win95 CD. A local comp shop suggested upgrading to ME, so I got the upgrade version, and they installed it for me. It was only afterwords that I realized that the 95 CD should have been needed for the upgrade to ME. I called to inquire how they had been able to use the upgrade version (I assumed they had a 95 CD laying around), and they indicated there was a way to bypass this. I'm just curious if anybody here knows how to do that little trick. The person at the store seemed reluctant to spill the secret. I guess they could also be full of crap, and really did have a 95 disc to use.

I guess that store was doing this illegally, so they wouldn't say much.

During installation of upgrade versions, it'll ask you for proof of a previous edition, at which time you can just put a previous version of Windows CD into the drive and the installation will continue.

Even if the shop did do some kind of trick, i'm almost sure that unless you have a copy of the win95 cd, its still illegal...... Thats why the upgrades are cheaper than the full version.

Oh well. The part that gets me though is that MS already got paid once for a full version, so why should I have to turn around and pay them for a full version again? I realize that I'm not the one who paid them for the full 95 version in the first place, but come on! That's like me trying to put a better stereo in my car, but being told the only way to do that is to get a whole new car. I understand MS's concern over piracy (people should pay for the software they use), but I don't feel like I'm ripping them off. Like I said, they've already been payed for a full version of their OS once. I feel like I'm getting ripped off being told that I have pay them again for a full version. Maybe that's why so many people don't like MS...

Is it even possible to find a full version of 95/98 anymore if I wanted to be totally honest about this?

I appreciate the reply, man. I don't think I'll be needing to reformat or reinstall anytime soon, so I think I'll try to stop losing sleep over this!

Seriously, you should never go out and buy win95 or 98 again. That would be insane. If you really needed to reformat your harddrive again, then do what the shop did and borrow someone's cd while you upgrade. I seriously doubt microsoft would care. I'm sure also that if you have some kind of serial # or manual from the origial win95 that they would mail you a new cd...

Then again it is Microsoft...

I should note though that you really screwed yourself by installing WinME. That OS is gonna force you to format your hard drive since it has a lot of issues. So expect to have a solution for this problem soon. I upgraded to WinME and had to format and go back to Win98se within 14 days.

maybe your system is just messed up. i've been using winme over a year and it's more stable than 98

Nah, there is an overwhelming majority who just can't use winME. My HP cd-writer wouldn't work with it. My adsl modem that I had then didn't work either. The worst part about it was that when I went to uninstall it it left traces everywhere so I had no choice but to reformat.

At least I got it for free. I feel sorry for people that actually bought it. Most of the components of WinME are free to download anyways. The only real nice part about the OS was that it loaded fast, but that's the least of my worries.

Windows '95 gave me a lot more problems than ME. It was always crashing and the reason I upgraded in the first place. In fact the only reason I had to reformat and reinstall ME was because I changed out my processor and mobo (actually almost everything except my HDD  !), and I understood that that was the best way to avoid problems with my system upgrade. But hey, you're not the first one I've heard say that ME sucks. I've personally just have not had any problems myself. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough!

I have a HP 9110 and it didn't work. I used WinME a while back though and wasn't about to wait for them to get thier act together. I upgraded everything from drivers to firmware and got no dice.

Maybe it all works now, but it's too little too late. I wouldn't take any chances anyways, so my recommendation is always going to be against WinME. If it ain't broke, then don't fix it. Microsoft had no business releasing that OS.
