Any last minute suggestions?

Thermalright XP-120
Panasonic Panaflo 120 x 38mm Fan, "FBA12G12M" -OEM

What I'm going to keep using:

Liteon 832S 8x DVD burner
WD1200JB ATA
WD2000JB ATA
Dell 2005fpw (just ordered)
Antec 1040SB w/ 400W PSU
other non-relevent stuff, no floppy

I'm going to borrow a 6800U PCI-E for a little bit while prices and availability settle on the cards.

I'm going to OC the crap out of this thing but want to keep the noise down.

I'm going to use onboard sound and get some Logitech Z-2300's.

Any better suggestions? Any better 120mm fans out there that are quiet? What about the memory? It's the cheapest TCCD set out there. Would the Corsair TWINX1024-4400C25 be a better choice?

A few people here haven't had too much luck OCing the 90 nano s939 chips. I hope you have better luck. 2.3 is about as good as it gets generally. The s754s will get to 2.45, but they start higher.

For high FSB OCing, I heavily recommend G.Skill PC4400<b>LE</b>. It's about the only TCCD that can hit 300FSB at 2.5-3-3-7 consistently at 1t (sometimes it needs 2.5-4-3-7). Usually does it at low volts, too. And if you don't hit the high FSBs on your ODMC (mid/early Winchesters seem to have shittah ones), it'll still run the tight timings at lower speeds.

If you don't plan on going beyond 260FSB, OCZ VX is probably your best bet. It'll consistently run 260 2-2-2-5 1t if you give it the volts (which you can do with that board). This stuff is fairly cheap, too.

Looks like a good system! Have fun!

Corsair is getting very high reviews right now. Especially there higher performance RAM.

You're the only one I've heard say that. The 939's are consistantly hitting 2.6 whether you get a 3000+ or 3200+ but I'd rather get the 3200+ just to make it easier.

For memory I'll read up on some of the stuff you guys posted. Thanks.

Anything else to consider?

I wish that I got the 3200+ over the 3000+ for the multiplier advantage while OC'in.

Anyway, my 3000+ Winny won't go over 2.3GHz either on retail AMD heatsink, but many do hit those 2.5-2.6 marks with better cooling. I too believe you get a larger MHz boost on the 90nm chips.

Personally I stick to 2.2GHz because that is the fastest I can get keeping 4X HT and there is almost zero performance gain going to 2.3GHz and reducing to 3X HT. With a 3200+, I should have been able to do 2.4GHz with 4X HT, which woul have been nice.

I think except for having fun from overclocking, there can't be any reason to buy S939 Winchester A64s instead of 2.4 GHz Newcastle A64 3400+. Your OC'ed 2.3 GHz Winchester 3000+ is not faster than 2.4 GHz 3400+, if not sometimes slower.

Sure am - doing the saving now and will purchase when I have enough. Haven't decided if/how much I'm going to OC, but I still want to look at as much info to make an informed decision.

looks good. just about exactly what i have.

i think what you are getting is one of the most bang for buck setups for a modern rig..

i'd stick with the 3200 for the price.

my only recommendation is on the cooler, i'd check into the arctic cooling freezer 64 instead.
it has larger heat pipes and is only $20 for heatsink/fan.

they make the NV silencers, which are awesome.. so they can be trusted. but theres not alot of info out there on it, so ppl dont really know about the freezer 64.

heres a post on the 775 version.. <A HREF="http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=851387&highlight=arctic+cooling+freezer" target="_new">http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=851387&highlight=arctic+cooling+freezer</A>

of course, the prescott is a much better example for a good cooler to flex its muscles than a a64.

i'd go for pc4000 memory or higher as well if you are overclocking.. but TCCD will be expensive for 1gig of DDR500..
i use this <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-517&depa=0" target="_new">http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-144-517&depa=0</A>

i can attest to its quality, it works great for me.. but im not sure if its TCCD.

i'd prob suggest that twinX you are looking at, or gskill. if you are willing to pay for either of them.
twinX is great from what i've seen.

the cooler im speaking of means you save alot of cash, and dont have to worry about the fan choice. there is a review of the freezer 64 at insanetek..

otherwise you have an awesome setup. i'd prob throw a X850xt pe in there personally for under $500 beans. but an ultra or gt would be just as good if you could get one of them for a decent price.
i personally hate to let go of shader model 3.0, no matter how "useless" some make it out to be.. you are spending all this cash for latest, killer stuff... so why not get the latest stuff.

<A HREF="http://home.mchsi.com/~mwkinney/overclock.JPG" target="_new">http://home.mchsi.com/~mwkinney/overclock.JPG</A>

once i get my DFI i think im looking at 2.6-2.8ghz stable. its a vastly superior overclocker (same one DH is getting).

2.7ghz stable. even on the asus! i'd like to see what his chip could do on the DFI.

i've seen 3.0ghz 3200+ on air before with the DFI.
lets see a 754 do that.

paul, you need the DFI.

its possible you got that "bad" of a chip.. but i'd wager a motherboard swap would improve it.

most ppl are held back by the boards and their blockage at a cpu frequency of about 230-245.

more proof what the DFI does:
<A HREF="http://img239.exs.cx/img239/449/34654jd.jpg" target="_new">http://img239.exs.cx/img239/449/34654jd.jpg</A>

not bad, even for a FX55.

DFI owns all.<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by GAME on 02/12/05 03:41 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

This morning a stick of memory in my rig died so I couldn't boot for 30 minutes until I figured that one out...

It was a sign to just order the damn thing, so I did:

DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D - RETAIL
A64 3200+ 90nm (939) - OEM
Thermalright XP-120
Panasonic Panaflo 120 x 38mm Fan, "FBA12G12M" -OEM
1GB Corsair TWINX1024-4400C25PT
Arctic Silver 5
MSFT Wireless Optical Keyboard and Mouse

Thanks everyone. I looked at a lot of fans and such but finally settled on the panaflo. They seem to be a decent balance between the amount of air they push, the RPM's, and low noise. The OEM 3200+ saved me some money which was nice. All in all I spent $748, plus the $602 for the monitor. I'll wait a month to buy a videocard and hopefully prices will have settled down a bit. Right now the PCI-e prices are just ridiculous.

I'm hearing what people are saying about only hitting 2.3Ghz, but from what I've seen most people with low results either were using memory that wasn't up for the task, or didn't have a motherboard with OC potential like the DFI board. Even if I only hit 2.3Ghz I don't care since I'm just doing it for fun, but I'll post my results and let everyone know how I do. I'm sure I'll be asking for help.

Definitely AMD. My purchase will be for a new rig. Right now I have an XP1500+ (Palomino) on a Soyo Sy-K7Z Dragon Plus (266A chipset). Not OC'd and using some Crucial RAM. When I upgrade it will be a major performance boost for me! Still haven't decided whether I should spend the extra $50-60 for this <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-220-006&depa=1" target="_new">PC3200 Patriot RAM</A> or the <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-220-009&depa=1" target="_new">PC4000 Patriot</A>. Right now, I'm really looking at going with this <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-299&depa=1" target="_new">PC3200 Mushkin Dual pack</A>. It probably won't OC much, but then again I prob won't OC much...Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The DFI is the king OC mobo, but the K8N neo2 platinum isn't a slouch. Anand got 2.6GHz with my same mobo and cpu. I just think my luck ran out low with this particular cpu. But remember, I am using the retail AMD fan also.

I will never go with economy memory again. The difference between running at slow timings and really aggressive timings is pretty noticable to me so I want memory that can put out. My current memory put out for a little bit but then I had to lower the timings all the way to the point where today the memory died. That was Crucial PC2100 cas2.5. Got half a gig for $60 back in the day.
