Yes i am currently useing an old dell mechanical i know the keys are much noisier that a membrane board but i have pets and no matter how hard you try to keep a clean environment pet hair always gets stuck in them and to me mechs are a lot easier to clean. as for backlighting i dont really have a set color or configuration though my headphones and tower are blue and my mouse is red lit

Hmm sorry i may have said this wrong. I mean have you tried different kinds of mechanical switches? Like blues, greens, reds, browns, blacks... ect..

If you havent i recommend getting a sampler board with all the different key types.

ah this is something i wasn't fully aware of, so am i correct in assuming that color means a different type of switch and not just a color in most cases?

Okay, So here's what I did when I first bought a mech board.

I bought a switch sample for like $10 and tested the switches to see what took my taste. I went with blues because I love the feedback bump it gives you.

A-lot of people who haven't used mechs before quite like brown switches. May I ask how you type?

If money is no object, definitely go for the Corsair K95. I've used it and absolutely loved it. I'm currently using a Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth 2014 that I got for $90 from Newegg around the beginning of December and despite all the negative attention Razer gets I actually really enjoy it. The keys are firm enough despite what some people say and I really like the macro key placement. So if you'd rather get something a bit cheaper i'll tentatively recommend a Blackwidow. I just hope it doesn't give out on me anytime soon lol.

Also just to parrot what most people are saying, try and test out the different types of key switches somehow. I personally prefer Brown due to them not being clicky and the actuation bump. But that's just me.

Wow I'm glad I asked before just buying. I went to one of my local pc stores to see what they had and was able to test out a blue , red and green button. Though I didn't buy anything I did prefer the green button on the blackwidow it's very similar to the old Dell board I currently use just a little more noisy on the click. The red was ok felt like a membrane board and blue seemed to light to me. Looks like I've got more research to do. Thanks for all the input so far and please keep it coming.

Just to prevent you from buying something you don't want, Razer uses their own brand of switches called Khail. The Green Khail is their equivalent of Cherry MX Blue. But the different Cherry MX Green is like a much more resistant version of Cherry MX Blue, with a bigger actuation point.

So don't buy a keyboard with Cherry MX Green because of Razer's Green Khail switches until you've tried it haha. It's confusing lol.

You could try looking at brown and blacks.

Personally I think Browns are the nearest to a membrane feeling. You should look at the way the switches work for example the blues push back at you giving you the tactile bump to let you know you've actuated the key.

A sampler is deff a good way to go, I have a logitech G710+ which I think has browns.
I really like feedback and didn't like the idea of reds. I would have an old Clunky IBM keyboard if it came in backlit. I picked the browns because I didnt want it to be too noisy but realistically its still very loud and given the choice again i'd probably just get blues.

I would advise also not just looking at the switches but the actual key layout. A lot of other keyboards i was considering had funny arrangements of keys like enter, backspace, space, arrows, numpad etc.

the G710 is close to traditional but the allignment of the qer line and the number line is unusual, and if switching between this and another board for league of legends it really throws me off!

I personally found MX reds a little weak and not as lively as the MX Blues. The reds are a linear switch and I suppose I didn't like that!

I know where you are coming from. I prefer reds, although Ironically it was my wife that bought me the keyboard and she hates the sound it makes!! :D
