I've used a membrane keyboard for all of my life, but a few days ago my Razer Arctosa keyboard (membrane) broke due to me being an idiot, So I took my time with searching for a new keyboard and I found out about mechanical keyboards, after learning some more about time i realised that blue switches would be the best for me, and so I got the razer Blackwidow 2013 and it feels awesome, after trying to type on my old keyboard again (it still feels fine, it just won't work on my computer) it felt god awful, and that's only after a few hours of using this keyboard, it is much louder though and as a person who does live commentaries every now and then it might hurt, but it's worth the hit.

(I do not want brown switches)

What is your opinion on this? I definitely feel like I'll never go back to membrane keyboards.

tl;dr : Mechanical vs Membrane (regular) keyboards?

keep in mind that while voting you should also consider price and noise levels, but ultimately vote based on what you prefer.

Mechanical all the way. I'm old school and started on computers when I was a little kid. This was back before they made the cheap-o membrane keyboards and although I adapted over time once I got back into computers I spent the extra money to get a mechanical keyboard. If you do a lot of typing it's worth it. I have a Mionix Zibal 60 and it's a very solid keyboard. It's cherry black switches, though, and I prefer the feel of blues a bit more. I had a BlackWidow but my wife complained about the extra function keys and the funky "new age" type they use on the keys, which is why I switched.

once you have used a mechanical keyboard.... its hard to go back to using membrane.

personally my keyboard of choice is the original mechanical keyboard... the ibm model m with buckling spring keyswitches (the unicomp customizer copycat is a close second). its much louder than mx blues (2-3x as loud) but no other keyswitch can compare at all. there is no equial imho.

as far as your issue with noise... that may be able to be solved by getting som o-rings and installing them under the keycaps. wasdkeyboards sells them and i know a few other places do as well.

Some people hate the sound of mechanical keyboards. To me, it's melodic. And you're right, the original IBM Model M was loud, loud, loud. But, they were built like tanks which is why many are still in use today.

not to mention they could... in an emergency... be used as a self defense weapon and then later on the same day finish typing up that report you were were working on before havok struck.

solid metal backplate ftw!

Very good point, and in the event of an active shooter in the office I'd rather have something like that than the stapler or pair of scissors the government recommends you use.
