I have a 2 part question for you guys, and would love some input on bother and/or either!
Little bit about my setup to give you an idea. I have around 3-4 terabytes of media stored on a single 3.0 USB western digital MyBook. Recently I cam across PLEX, and I love it, it seemed like the perfect fit for me. I either have a Chromecast or Roku plugged into every TV in my house, 5 in total. I have the Plex server setup on my main PC and it streams via Plex app.
1)First off, I need some input on storage. I have a whole slew of video files from mp4, avi, to mkv. And a lot of inbetween. As the years go by I see myself only settling for HD, either 720/1080. I have been leaning more to 720 to save space. What is the best format to store video files in? and is it 720 or 1080. Next would be what is the best way to convert media files as well. Obviously converting up is not really an option, but if 720 is ideal, how would I go about reducing the 1080 files to save a ton of space?
2) Next would be, is using an external HDD the best option for several terabytes of media? One thing I am terrified of is losing all my data to a bad HDD and just be SOL with all my data I have spent 10+ years gathering. Would a safer alternative be like setting up a large NAS in a RAID configuration?
I want to that you guys in advance for any feedback. I really appreciate it!!!
