Media from XP not working on windows 8.1

I moved my media drive from old XP machine to new 8.1 machine. Whenever I click on a video or music file it responds slow, and ultimately gives me a "sever execution failed" message.

Also, can you recommend a codec pack to install on 8.1? I notice the mp4 video thumbs are displaying a music note, and flv video thumbs are displaying a white paper.

Make sure you've associated the player with the type of files you want to play.

I'm happy enough with Windows 7's Media Player.
