how can i create my own wifi home network to stream movies with my router and also be connected to the internet when my lan does not have a connection?
do i need to bridge the 2 or is it not possible to set up without others seeing my media?
or do i have to connect pc via cable to my router and wifi to recieve internet?

Here is what you need:

Ubiquiti picostation from internet communication from your dwelling to the source. http://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-PicoStation-2-4GHz-802-11g-Access/dp/B0055PKSG6
Your own router for your own personal wifi network. If phones/tablets are new enough and medium to high end they should have dual band radios and you can easily upgrade any laptops that are not dual band, anything that can be hardwired is best to be hard wired. By using the 5ghz band over the 2.4 ghz band you will avoid having to worry about the interference/saturation of the 2.4ghz band.

From a computer you can configure the ubiquiti to be a wireless bridge and setup a IP address for it to assign to its connected device (at the moment that is the...
currently i can successfully use a netbook with Ext HDD's connected to TV via monitor cable, this is connected via wifi to my router which allows us to watch recorded films etc on mobile or tablets on the balcony etc. however the problem is being able to recieve the local shared wifi to pick up email and skype during such times as the wifi networks are seperate and i think only allowed to be connected to one at a time.
using my router as an extender requires to be connected by ethernet cable to main router.
all confusing :-(

You could try the following:
- a Windows PC with wired connection to your "internal" router. This PC would be connected to the WAN port of the router, and wireless devices accessing the net through the router, through the PC
- the PC itself should be configured to share it's WiFi connection (Public internet). That way, your PC will act as "external" router between your "public" WiFi, and your own "internal" router
- make sure you secure that PC configuring the firewall to block outside access;
- once you have this done, your devices can access internet thru router/PC connection, and share media between themselves using router only.

From a computer you can configure the ubiquiti to be a wireless bridge and setup a IP address for it to assign to its connected device (at the moment that is the computer, but will be the router). You will then connect Ethernet from the picostation to the WAN port of your router and then configure the router as you would for a normal home connection and setup your own wifi networks.
The end result is that all of your connected devices can access your local home network as well as the internet, and your network will have the same basic security/shielding from the rest of the community/internet as a normal home network would.
