[SOLVED] Memory and motherboard failure? Help!

I have a Dell Optiplex 9020 with a i7-4770 installed. It has 16gb of ram(4x4gb), as it came with it. i have upgraded it and put in an ssd and a graphics card and whatnot, but that’s not the issue.

I wanted to upgrade to 32gb ram because i use after effects and want my pc to handle heavier projects. When i bought and installed my ram(4x8gb), it just didn’t work. There was an orange light that flashed 3 times before a long pause, and this was somehow the motherboards fault??(according to Dell light codes) so i tried taking out two of the Ram, making it 16gb, but still no luck.

anyways i reinstalled my old ram and it worked fine. I’m really confused as to which ram i should buy and which ram is compatible with my current pc. The ram that works is a Sk Hynix 4GB 2Rx8 PC3 - 12800U PB no AA which is 1600mhz i believe. I have also noticed that 2 of my current ram is different, and only works when i put it in ABAB order, which also confused me. It’s not much different, just the colour at the top of the stick and that it’s 1Rx8 instead of 2Rx8.

Anyways, the Ram that i bought and tried to fit is included in a picture below, as is the ABAB Ram that is currently installed. Can i have some help on this? https://ibb.co/DMqgnCq = New ram https://ibb.co/TH7Ljw0 = Old Ram

It looks like you're mixing single and dual rank DIMMs with your old sticks and trying to install all dual rank DIMMs with the new sticks. It could be that your system will only support specific sticks of RAM when using all dual rank DIMMs. As long as your system isn't USFF it should support 32GBs (4x8GB sticks) but they probably need to be specific sticks of RAM.

It looks like you may need DDR3L (lower voltage) sticks. See here - https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/dell/optiplex-9020-(small-form-factor)
You may be able to get 2 of the 16GB kits and have them work fine but I would reach out to Dell support to see what they recommend.
