Memory Card Removal

Hello,
I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with the 2 256MB cards in it currently. I have used the crucial site to determine that I could purchase 2 Corsair 240-Pin DDR2 1GB PC2-5300 memory cards. Why could I not buy 4 and pull the 2 256MB out completely and replace for full system usage of 4 GB

I'd rather buy 2x2GB if I were you, and drop the 256MB chips entirely. Less slots used will mean less heat, less power usage and less that can go wrong. A single 4GB chip would be best, but can cost you a pretty penny due to DDR2 prices these days.

According to your rigs spec sheet, that board is not going to support a RAM stick more than 1 GB, so you are safe in buying 4 x 1Gb sticks of 400-MHz (PC2-3200) or 533-MHz (PC2-4300) DDR2 . If you can get your hands on them.
