[SOLVED] Memory for an HP Z400

I recently got an old HP Z400 workstation and it only has 3gb of ram in it. Why 3, who knows. Anyway this is my first workstation, and after doing some research re: memory I am still a bit confused. I realize that it does not support registered ram, but apparently can be either ecc or non ecc, just not mixed. Can I simply use std ddr3 ram or am I stuck with server type ram? In the past I found really great deals on server ram, but not now, unless I was looking at RDIMMS and just didn't know it. Anyway, please help. Thank you.

The z400 is a bit of an oddball and came in two motherboard variants, one with 4 slots and one with 6. These threads are a good read if you want to try to get ram outside of the HP recommended ecc udimms:

Okay, thank you. I have the one with 6 slots. Not sure if that matters other than being capable of more ram.

It does make some difference as it was a different version of the motherboard--you'll see differences mentioned in both of those threads.

These are not always correct as they just puppet the manufacturer's specs. Reality may be different like my z420 that has 8x 32GB LRDIMMs in it.
