Memory for Dimension 8100

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 1.5 Ghz with 512MB of RAM (2-256MB modules
occupying two of the four memory banks). I would like to upgrade with
another 512 MB for the 2 empty banks. When I go to Dell's site they have a
notice which states that the customer will have to remove all current memory
in order to upgrade. I'm guessing the RDRam they're selling is not
compatible with the original stuff in my computer. I currently have Toshiba
PC800-45 RAM, part No. THMR1N16E-8. It is non-ECC RAM. I was hoping to
pick up some working RAM through Ebay and there are plenty of similar
sounding 512MB kits available. Does anyone know if there are brands which
won't fit well and what exactly to look for? Samsung has some different
part numbers which sound identical but I'm wondering if there are smaller
differences which would make them incompatible. Some of the Samsung part
nos. are MR16R082GBN1-CK8, MR16R082GAN1-CK8, and MR16R1628EG0. Has anyone
had any experience adding to existing memory to the 8100? Thanks

Any PC800 - 45ns will work. Did it in both my 8100(s). Samsung is good
stuff.

still WAY too expensive. Probably better to sell the entire machine on ebay
and replace it.

That's a good deal. Better than Zipzoomfly, which is who I usually
recommend.

Still, though, $200 would go a long way towards a new machine that is MUCH
faster.

Best thing to do is to open up the clamshell case and see how many RDRAM sticks
are inside. If there are four, then two need to be removed to add two others of
greater capacity. If there are two plus two CRIMM modules, remove the CRIMMs
and install two RDRAM sticks. The latter is what I have seen in four surplus
8100s I bought recently.

In any event, RDRAM is pretty generic stuff, tho manufactured to higher
standards than some other memory. Only a handful of manufacturers made the
stuff, Samsung, Toshiba, NEC, and Infineon (Hynix). Get a matched pair from a
reputable source and don't look back, despite the dis-information on the Dell
web site. Even ECC RDRAM will work, altho it is more expensive than non-ECC.

The important thing here is to install exact matched pairs in each pair of
memory sockets. And each pair can have different capacities, albeit with a
slowdown in performance... Ben Myers

Yes, and PC800-45 or the more expensive PC800-40 or PC1066-32 184-pin will all
work fine in a Dimension 8100. PC711 or PC600 slows it down. I must have had
my wires crossed, or maybe a brain parity... Ben Myers

It should be noted that you'll get no benefit from mixing ECC with
non-ECC, in fact the server must be in non-ECC mode to work with mixed
modules.

Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions. I feel a little better
now about buying a different brand than the Toshiba in here. I had already
checked inside the box and I have two modules installed so don't have to
pull any out in order to add two more. I really appreciate the help,
especially with Dell's site telling me I would have to pull what I have in
order to add what they were selling--that made me a bit apprehensive.

outlet.dell.com at 4700 models. A nice 4700, P4-2.8, 80GB, 512MB, XP Home,
CD-RW, DVD, Modem == $354 Splurge for $444 and you can get one with 1GB
memory.
