I have an HP/Compaq 6730b laptop. It has 4gb installed, 2gb in the slot under the keyboard and 2gb on the lower slot.

I was hoping to install new memory to get it to its maximum of 8gb. I think it takes DDR-2 PC-6400 800 200pin sticks.

I have been unable to find the 2 c 4gb sticks I need easily. Some sites like Newegg want over $100 for a kit.

Does anyone have ideas for usable alternatives to use or places to get?

I am also wondering if I should try to upgrade to Windows 10 or try out Linux / keep Windows 7 - any opinions welcome!

Thanks!

Mike

I looked here:
HP Compaq 6730b Notebook PC Specifications | HP® Customer Support

and further searched to find this:
Amazon.com : 800 mhz ddr2 sdram

Would double check that (any) will work for you, but a far cry from your cost find. I also didn't quickly see an 8GB kit.

Edit to say that unless you can find this super duper cheap or nearly free I wouldn't.
Might be worthwhile to check around at various "goodwill" locations or pawn shops to see if they have anything that old laying back somewhere, perhaps even local repair locations.

If you were going to spend $200 on RAM for this, you are well on your way to a cheap new system that would run circles around this one.
