I know that my Dell 170l uses DDR PC-2700 and that is 333 mHz type ram but is it ok to use a DDR PC-3200 type ram that is 400 mHz? I seem some websites say that it will work but just wanted to make sure if it will work forsure.

Or do I need to just use PC-2700 type ram in order to work forsure?

Yes that RAM will be fine, memory is happy to clock lower then its rated just not higher. Instead what you should check is that voltage and try to match them, though I don't think its that big a problem with the old RAM.

That help?

[EDIT]
o1die is that to do with other settings then the frequency?

My comment is for folks who don't like fixing problems. I suggest you inspect your old sticks and check if they're single sided or double sided (chips on one or both sides). Try to at least match the ram chipset configuration. Buy the pc2700 if it's cheaper. You can use crucial, corsair, kingston, or hynix (samsung).
