Memory Frequency Question

Will the memory frequency affect the speed of a gtx 970? because when I was buying the guy who was selling me told me to buy a 1866 frequency memory instead of a 1600 that I was planning to buy, He told me it will affect the speed of the GPU. I know that the 1866 is faster than the 1600 one but will it actually affect the GPU speed in anyway cause from my understanding the GPU memory is separate from the the cpu ram.. Is he actually telling me the truth or simply wants me to buy a much expensive memory? cause I see in youtube budget builds with only a 1333 or 1600 frequency memory only some are actually ddr2 help please.. and thanks for enlightening me

System RAM frequency is in no way related to GPU performance, he's probably getting you into buying expensive stuff. 1866Mhz has minutely noticeable gains over 1600Mhz even in memory intensive tasks, GPU will not be bothered by it.

1866 can allow slightly more performance than 1600, but it's certainly not worth paying significantly more money for. It should cost nearly the same as 1600 anyway.

But yeah it was just a guy trying to upsell with some bullshit reason. It would only help the GPU if you were using an integrated GPU - then the difference would be substantial. But dedicated graphics cards have their own memory, and in cards like the GTX 970 it's WAY faster than DDR3-1866 anyway (until we get into the 3.5GB controversy anyway).
