Im getting an intel core i7 8700k, and reading the specs it says is supports a max of 2666 Mhz of memory, but the Corsair Vengeance RGB im getting has 3200, should I get the 2666MHz version? If I get the 3200, will those extra MHZ be wasted? Please help

Solution

Yes, exactly.
it depends on the motherboard, if you have a motherboard that support it (z370) you can turn on xmp and basically you have automatically applied a ram oc.

if you have a h310/b360/h370 chipset, the maximum speed your ram will run is 2666, even if you are on xmp for 3200, the clock will be capped at 2666.

I have a Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 5, which i've heard that can reach up to 4000 something. So just go to bios and turn on XMP and im good to go?

Ohh, thanks I get it now to, I bought a i5-9400 and it says it's 2666 only, but windows and all system check ups say it is running at 3200MHz (i have enabled XMP profile) I have a z390 motherboard, so It is in fact running at 3200MHz, correct?
