Hello all this is my first ost and I'm in sort of a delima here.

My story goes like this I have an older setup with an Asus Rampage II Gene motherboard with xeon processor. I had this idea I was going to add 2 SSD's into my computer with one just for the OS and the other to run my photoshop programs rom, and use the 1 TB HD already in the system as storage.

OK so in this process I ordered some Kingston Hyper X 24 GB set of ram to up the ram in my system.
This is the ram

Ok I found out my MB s a Sata II board and I wouldn't get full use from the SSD's I purchased so now I'm looking to purchase a new MB and processor
The MB I'm seeking is this.

My question is will the ram I purchased for the Rampage II still work in the ASUS P9X79 WS LGA 2011 Intel X79

Any advice on this matter is greatly appreciated as I can send it back and swap it if need to be since it's unopened.

Thanks in advance

James

The ram you purchased is designed for a 6 slot socket 1366 motherboard, but you can use it on any ddr3 motherboard. You may have some leftover sticks, which you can sell on craigslist or your favorite website. Be sure you are ordering the correct board for your cpu. Socket 2011 takes a different cpu from socket 1155 or 1366. And you don't need such a high end board unless you have deep pockets and an unlimited budget. What cpu are you going to use?

Thanks I'm looking at either using the Intel 3820 or the 3930 I'm leaning more towards the 3820 since there's not much use as of yet with 6 core cpu.

Basically I'm going to be starting this from the groud up, starting with a new MB and cpu I'm not sure if the ram I just purchased for my current MB will work in the one I'm going to order. If not I'll just return it for the correct ram. If' i'll work I'll hold onto it.

The X-79 motherboard will use quad channel ram and it's best that you use that type to get the best use of the ram. Yes the ram you have will work in the new MB but not at quad channel. If you want the best usage of ram for what you do then I would return it and get the quad channel ram.
Amazon doesn't list the details like Newegg does so here is a link to the same board at Newegg so that you can better see the features of the board.

Thanks Inzone,

I'll swap out my ram for quad channel and do this right.

Here's the ram I had in mind if I needed to exchange it out, input on this also would be appreciated.
