I did a little research, but I feel like I've allocated way too much time on this when I'm sure someone here can help me in a matter of minutes after seeing the post.
I'll list my specs at the bottom of the post.
I originally thought the problem was Opera Browser. When it's open, no matter how many tabs, it's the same memory usage no matter if 1 tab is open or 15 tabs. Normally, closing out of opera lowers my memory usage from 80% to 30% or under. I have 16gb, so that means opera on it's own is using 50%! 8gb of memory even with only 1 tab open!!! But the problem with that is that in task manager, it CLAIMS it's only using 1730mb of memory or somewhere in that area... pretty much anywhere from 1.5gb-2gb on average, but somehow, closing out of it lowers memory usage by 8gb.
I decided to just reinstall opera and see if that fixed it first. But it did not. Just a few moments b4 making this post, I tried it again. It was at 82% memory, I closed out of Opera, except this time it didn't go down... IT WENT UP! It went up to 86% memory!
I noticed that "Photos" (Windows 10 app for viewing pictures) was using 600mb and was the highest memory using app listed in task manager. So I closed out of that, and it dropped from 86% to 23%. So it was using around 9-10gb on it's own, even though task manager listed only 600mb?? WTF???
So I hopped over to the performance tab of task manager and seeing some odd stuff. In the past, when I had a memory leak, either the non-paged pool or the hardware reserved were very high. While I was sitting at 86% memory usage, I had 488mb non-paged pool, 0mb of hardware reserved.
When "photos" was open, in use (compressed): was at 4.4gb. Available was ALSO at 4.4gb..... By my math, that's only 8.8gb total.... However, on the top left, it said 13.6/15.9gb (86%).
After I closed out of "Photos" the numbers changed. Now, with opera open (Even though it was causing the issue originally) and photos closed (which seems to be the issue after I reinstalled opera) I am now using 4.7gb/15.9gb (30%).
In Use (compressed): 4.7gb, Available: 11.2gb. still 488mb of non-paged pool and still 0mb of hardware reserved. (just a note, I have NEVER seen hardware reserved at 0)
So I guess 6gb somehow just disappeared? I only have 2x 8gb sticks, so that means it was claiming it had more than 1 stick (4.4 in use, 4.4 available = 8.8, my sticks are only 8gb each so it HAD to be reading both sticks to go over 8). And how could closing out of photos make it go from 8.8 total to 15.9 total???
I've reopened "Photos" and currently sitting at 4.8gb in use, 11gb available, 0mb hardware reserved, 9.5/31.8gb committed, 2.2gb cached. 658mb paged pool, 488mb non-paged pool. Everything seems to be working okay for now, but the leak was still there after reinstalling opera, nothing else has been changed, so it still needs fixed...
This has been going on for roughly 1 week now, until today, the culprit had ALWAYS been opera browser, closing it lowered my memory usage by a huge amount, now out of the blue it's a windows 10 app causing the exact same thing, and opera is working correctly. What do I do from here?
