That Windows itself possible problem still bothering me.
Any chance you have a free partition on your harddrive? Or a spare HDD?
In order to troubleshoot the problem without wasting time I would rather made a second Win2000 installation, downloaded and installed some possibly proved good test programs (or just programs people never complain on), nothing else, and ran untill simulated the same problem. If it happened, I would confirm it would be a hardware problem.
It doesn't take much time, probably less than possible to spend on an investigation the problems on the existing Win2000 installation.
Even I hadn't have an empty partition/HDD, I would try another Win2000 installation into different directory instead. Troubleshoot on pure Win2000 and also on 100% proved stable programs/tests, see what happens, and then uninstall. It's easy. If you see that all well known stable programs work on your machine, but other troublesome ones don't, then call the faulty program manufacturers and tell them.
