I have a system consisting of an AMD T-bird 1000, Abit KT-7 Raid MB, Asus Geforce2 MX 32M video card, and 256 MB PC-133 ram. The problem is that when running Windows 98 with all other programs disabled, I only have 130MB of memory free. That means Win98 is using 126MB to run???? I have run a few different system resource moinitor programs and they all report the same. Also, when I run Task 2000 to see what programs are running only the necessary ones are there. If I add up the memory it reports each one is using I only get about 30-40MB of memory in use. So what is tying up all the other memory? The system seems to run fine, but I would love to know where that other 100MB of ram went. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob Andersen

Please run MSCONFIG.EXE from Start/Run, choose the Startup tab, and give us the list of programs that are running when the computer first boots up.

This can also be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Tools/System Configuration Utility/Startup.

You may have several unnecessary programs that are loading from the Registry.

Right now I'm at work and don't have access to the computer, but I have run MSConfig and only left the necessary programs checked and still have problems. Thanks for the advice.

Have you got your vcache cranked up to 65meg?

I lock mine at 65meg, because win98 doesn't know what in the hell to do with 128meg, much less 256+ meg.....

Ok, in msconfig I only left systray, explorer.exe and loadpowerprofile checked and I still have about the same amount of free memory. Unless something is loading some other way and I can't see it running with the resource monitor programs I must have other problems. Also, the Vcache, is that a bios setting? If so, I believe mine is set to 64MB. Any other advice would be appreciated.
