Memory Problems, possible solutions?

Hello everyone,

I currently have a motherboard with triple channel ram support with 4 ram slots and I have a triple channel ram with 2gb, 1866mhz, 10-10-10-28.

There is an error with one of the ram sticks, found with memtest86+, where it would show 1 error per 2 passes. When I take out the bad ram and run the test with only 2 it runs without any errors. I have made peace with the fact that the single ram cannot be used but what would be the cheapest solution for replacing them? I'll list the options that I have below.

1. I could just use only 2. I'm not too sure if there is any consequence in using only 2 out of 3 in a triple channel?
2. I do have another ram set, 1333 8gb, but its dual channel.
3. I think my motherboard has a limit of 16gb? but my cpu lists 24? maybe I could use either 3 or 4? If I do use 3, would there be any problems?
4. Buy a new set of triple channel?

I think that you need to list the motherboard make and model because if you say you have a triple channel motherboard then you have to have either three or six ram slots not four. If you have four then you have a dual channel motherboard. Also the max would be 24gb on a triple channel MB and 16 gb on a dual channel MB.

its an early intel mobo, GA-EX58-UD3R, its a triple channel with 4 ram slots. but it also says dual channel can be enabled, not sure if all slots can be filled tho. very confusing motherboard.

I do have the mobo overclocked right now at, 216 bclk, with 8x memory ratio giving me 1728 mhz and timings of 8-8-8-24 for the triple channel ram that has one damaged. I guess if I do use all 4 sticks my overclock would kill the 1333... any way around for using the 1866 and the 1333, without changing my bclk?

Ok thanks for posting the model of the motherboard as it does help to actually see what you are talking about. This is a first for me in that there is a x-58 motherboard which is supposed to be triple channel and yet it also suppotrs dual channel.
If you are using triple channel ram then you would be putting the three sticks into the white ram slots and if using dual channel then you would put one in the first white slot and then the second stick in the blue slot.
So here's what you want to do;
If you want to go with triple channel then get the three sticks for the white slots and either get 2gb or 4gb sticks.Uf you want to go with dual channel then you could get either 4gb or 8gb sticks and put them in the first whits slot and the blue slot. Since you have a set of dual channel then you could use that but only in the first white slot and the blue slot. No mixing and matching even though it may work it is not recomended.

That would be why I said no mixing and matching because when you raise the BCLK it affects all the slots and there is no way to seperate them.

I had a look at your mobo and it looks like there is 3 white mem slots and one blue. is it possible that you have one of those chips in the blue slot? If so then is it possible that the computer is only reporting that chips memory capacity and not the other you have installed?

I am thinking you are not using the required 3 memory chips but are only using one from the DDR3? memory chips

Alright, so I guess I got to choose between bigger storage or faster mhz. Also I was reading the mobo manual and it says to either use 1 & 4 or 1 & 2, rather then the blue slot. just in case someone else wants to know.

Also lateralnw, I had tested the 3 Ram in the white slots before as instructed by the manual. its just the Ram error... This ram error was the reason why my overclocking too so much longer then usual...
