[SOLVED] Memory running slow on new Ryzen system :(

Hi all,

Just built myself a new system comprising -

Ryzen 5 1600x
Corsair vengeance 3000mhz RAM - 2x8GB (cmk16gx4m2d3000c16)
AsRock b450M Pro4-F mobo (BIOS version 1.60)
Nvidia 960 (Just a stand in till I get my RX470 back from a friend)

Since building the system, I've been unable to get the RAM to go above 2133mhz. I've tried enabling XMP and setting it to 3000, 2933, 2666 and 2400mhz in the BIOS. Every one it does the restart 3 times thing and then reverts back to 2133mhz. Voltage is at 1.35v and SOC voltage at 1.15v. I've tried using Ryzen Master to alter the settings, same thing. I've tried the RAM sticks in A1/B1 and A2/B2.

The only luck I've had is if I remove one of the sticks, the remaining one will then go up to 2933mhz and boot fine. But as soon as the 2nd stick goes back in, it reboots and back to 2133mhz.

I've checked the AsRock website and there is a newer BIOS, but that and in fact the one currently on the mobo state "*ASRock do NOT recommend updating this BIOS if Pinnacle, Raven, Summit or Bristol Ridge CPU is being used on your system. ". My CPU is a Summit ridge. I would however like to explore all other possibilities before I go changing the BIOS version though.

Can anyone offer any other solutions please as I'm currently about to start pulling out what little hair I have left :homer:

Note that while a motherboard controls RAM speed and lists certain speed capabilities and compatibilities, the memory controller is part of the CPU itself. 1st generation Ryzen CPUs are VERY memory sensitive and idk why anyone would purchase one with the deals on 2nd gen CPUs.

You could try increasing DRAM voltage even more to 1.4 or 1.45 to see if this helps or it could just be the memory modules that you purchased because each CPU has certain memory modules that will work. Example is that memory may work fine with a 2nd or 3rd gen at 3000mhz but not with a 1st gen. I’d recommend trading the CPU or dealing with the slower speed.

Thanks for the reply. I got a 1st gen Ryzen because that's all my tight budget would allow. A 2nd gen one would have been an extra £30 which I didn't have. I didn't realise it would cause such problems :(

What really confuses me though is that one stick will work fine, but not two. Any idea why would that be please?

Same as people using 2 sticks and then 4 won’t work properly. 1 working shows that the memory CAN work at that speed with that CPU which is why I would try more voltage first and see if that gets it going.

OK, I tried the voltage at 1.4 and 1.2 and still no luck. The DRAM voltage wouldn't go any higher in the BIOS and I didn't want to push the SOC voltage too high, so I think I may have to save up and replace either the memory or the CPU. Which would you recommend, keeping in mind that I'll be selling the current part and would only be able to scrape together maybe another £30-40?
