Looking at picking up a 1333FSB E6750 when they hit NewEgg, and looking at 4GB of RAM to go with it.

At the moment, 4GB of Patriot PC2-6400 4-4-4-12 costs $148, while 4GB of Patriot PC2-8500 5-5-5-9 costs $270.

This machine needs to be bulletproof above all else, and so will not be overclocked.

So, the $122 question is, will the faster RAM make a difference?

No. You only need 667 MHz (that's PC2-5300) RAM to go along with a 1333 FSB processor. Therefore, the 800 MHz RAM will be more than enough, and still leave you some room for overclocking if you do decide to ever do it.

There will be a slight performance difference however, The $122 should be spent on virtually anything else first, because those will have a bigger hit on performance.

I have the same question and do intend to overclock the same chip but not too far as never done it before. I had decided on Crucial memory(Ballistix) but how far will the PC2-6400 allow me to take the the E6750? Do I need to be looking at the PC2-8500? I suppose the next question is what is a reasonable (and safe) overclock for that chip?

Cheers all

Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 at a 1:1 ratio with the E6750 will let you run it at 1600FSB or 3.2Ghz. Crucial memory also overclocks well you should have no trouble running it at PC2-8000.

No you can run your RAM FSB faster than your CPU FSB, but higher speed memory IMO is wasted if you do not overclock. The performance gain is minimal (1% to 5%), you get about the same performance gain using a dedicated sound card instead of onboard sound. Why waste money?
