I am just completing my build sheet and have come to one of my weaknesses: memory and timing. I have read about this and it still does not click. I know that timing is important to match with the processor but I still do not have a good understanding of why or how. So I turn to the community for guidance.

I am going with the Intel Duo Core 8400 on an Asus P5Q board. For whatever reason I have 4g of new memory laying around. It's two 2g sticks of OCZ Vista Upgrade 6400 with a timing of 5-6-6-18. On the system build forum, it was suggested that I dump this for the Mushkin with the timing of 5-4-4-12.

It's only around 70 bucks so I can do it. I just want to know if it's really that big of an issue. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!

RAM CAS latencies or timings are adjustable in BIOS. I don't think anyone I know would dump PC26400 RAM in hand rated at 5-6-6-18 and pay for a RAM 'upgrade' to the same speed PC26400 rated at 5-4-4-12.
