I have 2 stick (4GB) patriot ddr2 800 RAM in my desktop and i want to upgrade to 8GB, is it recommended that i buy the same type and brand? i know i want 800 for sure.

It's best never to mix-match Frequency, CAS Timings and/or Voltage. Better yes not to use different brands, required no. Also, obviously you'll need a 64-bit OS and verify that your MOBO will support 8GB of RAM - some DDR2 MOBO cannot fully utilize the full 8GB, and you'll need to change Memory Remapping -> Enabled.
