Hi,

I have an HP 8100 Elite SFF which has Windows 7 Pro 64bits and 2GB of RAM. The original RAM is the Samsung 2GB 1Rx8 PC3-10600.

i bought 8GB (2x4) of Kingston KTH9600BS/4G (http://www.kingstonmemorycards.co.uk/kingston-4gb-ddr3-dell-dimm-ram-memory-module-kth9600b-4g). On the Kingston site I saw that the KTH9600B/4G is compatible with the desktop, I don't know that the final "S" on this new model is.. (http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search/discontinuedmodels/Default.aspx?DeviceType=2&Mfr=HEW&Line=Elite&Model=61514&Description=Kingston_for_HEW_Elite_HP/Compaq_-_Elite_8100_SFF/_Convt_Minitower).

I remove the original one and added these two modules. The PC starts and the BIOS detects the 8GB of RAM. So far so good... but then Windows 7 just won't start, it appears the black screen with the Windows logo but the "animation" that usually appear while loading, doesn't appear. I've tried safe mode but it also doesn't work, get's stuck at one of the files..

Any idea on how to solve this? I've tried also with only one of the new kingstons but then I get a blue screen...

Regards

Try the original RAM, if that works, contact support for where you got the RAM or Kingston directly. The computer supports up to 16 gig so the amount of RAM is not an issue.

You may want to boot with the original RAM and do a BIOS update then try the new RAM.

If that doesnt also work, Try windows repair. Do memtest86 with the new ram. If it doesnt pass, send it back and ask for new one. Or just re install windows if you dont have anything personal photos, music files etc.

Hi guys,

I did a few more tests.

- Original RAM works fine and memtest runs fine on it
- New ram doesn't boot windows but is recognized on bios
- memtested individual ram sticks and pc rebooted..

I thought it could be for being "single rank" (I think the "S" on kigston reference means that" but the original ones from samsung are also "1R" (single ranked)...

Shouldn't they be compatible?

I've now got 34 memory modules that I can't use and the supplier refuses to accept them back...

Any more suggestions on what I could try? I have the latest BIOS version.

I haven't tried reinstalling windows, but if memtest fails I don't think I would have luck on that...

In laptops the S at the end is for low wattage not single channel, but the Kingston part numbers may not match that. Or do you mean single sided vs double sided?

You can check with Kingston not where you got the RAM from and see if you can exchange it.

You said you have 34 modules, which I am guessing means you have a bunch of computers there, did you try more than one to see if the new RAM works in it?

Yes, I meant "single sided", the voltage is the same.

I tried with kingston also but they said they can only replace if it's a default module, not an incompatible one... Never expected that a company this size would refuse to make the exchange...

I've tried two modules in two different computers and the behavior is the same... It could be really bad luck and got two deffective modules... but I don't want to open another one, because open modules can not be exchanged...

Yes, to make a swap for non-working parts, you would have had to order the part # they have for your model, although if they were not opened I don't see the issue with returning it. I'd go after the vendor that sold you the RAM especially if they were the ones that selected that RAM for your computers.

If you just picked it yourself based on the speeds you may have a harder time with getting them returned.

Hi lbramospt, is there any solution on the compatibility?

I faced the exact same problem as you do. And it is near impossible to get an exchange. Bought KVR13N9S8/4.

Unfortunately no... After several emails exchanged with kingston they finally explained what the modules are incompatible:

"there two differences.
First, memory KTH9600BS/4G is single rank and KTH9600B/4G is not single rank.
But the most important is the density of the chips.
The memory KTH9600BS/4G has been manufactured with 4Gbit chips, and the KTH9600B/4G with 2Gbit chips.
This is the reason why is not working.
Old motherboards don't support 4Gbit chips density"

I also wasn't able to return them to our supplier so I'll try to sell them on ebay, to see if I can get some money back...
