Memory upgrade results in spurious re-boots Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Hello;

Trying to upgrade RAM in my Toshiba Satellite L505-S6959 (from 4G to 8G), using Crucial RAM from Micron, as recommended by their Configurator. Have already replaced one of the 2 chips, because I could not even get to the Windows login screen. Now I can at least login, but when I come back from SLEEP or Hibernate, the pc re-boots.

Since I can get into SAFE mode okay, I imagine it's one of the SERVICES that I should be looking at (maybe?); but I don't want to go through the laborious effort of disabling all SERVICES, then selecting one at a time until I hit the failing SERVICE.

Any experience out there as to which few SERVICES may be the likely culprit?

The OS is at SP2, the BIOS is at the last Rev level, and all device drivers are at the latest level.

The instant before re-boot, the display clicks off (makes me suspicious of my video settings).

At any rate, does anyone have similar experiences that may relate to this?

Thanks in advance!! Mario

Hi!

Both purchased from crucial.com, and both the same:

Crucial 4GB DDR2-800 SODIMM
CT1007010
DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 64 •
upgrade for Toshiba Satellite L505-S6959 system.

I have, in fact, been able to put one stick in w/ existing RAM that came w/ the L505; with mixed results:

1st) only 2G of the 4G was recognized in one stick; so I sent it back for a replacement.
2nd) I ran w/ a mix, and got re-boots when coming out of SLEEP or Hibernate.
3rd) When I received the replacement stick, I never made it to the login screen; I just kept getting re-boots.
4th) I tried, per instructions from Crucial support, to run mixed; and the chip that gave me re-boots on return from SLEEP or...

4th) I tried, per instructions from Crucial support, to run mixed; and the chip that gave me re-boots on return from SLEEP or Hibernate still did so, while the replacement chip at least got me past login but BSOD'ed while loading SERVICES

One of the BSOD's was a STOP ...050 in fltmgr.sys (Page Fault?), and the other was a STOP ...D1 in msahci.sys

Add'ly: I was initially getting re-boots before login w/ the replacement chip, until I changed screen resolution (after booting to SAFE mode) from 32-bit to 16-bit.

I'm suspicious of what's going on w/ the video chipset, because there seem to be 2 discrete sets of drivers to choose from when I go into Screen settings:

Generic PnP Monitor on Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family, or
Default Monitor on Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Thanks again ... Mario
