Memorystick vs flash drive

Is there a difference between a flash drive and a memory stick?

The terminology is pretty loose for these.

The term memory stick is used as a product name by Sony for its camera cards but that doesn't stop people calling USB flash drives memory sticks.

They all use flash memory technology but camera cards are presumably optimised for speed (or at least the more expensive ones are) as this affects how quickly a camera can operate.
