Before I start, this is a 771 chip in a 775 board – Don’t know if that’s relevant, although I wouldn’t have thought so!
My system kept freezing whilst running Half-Life 2. As a result I decided to use memtest to check things out. This just froze my system. So, I then ran it against each of the four sticks individually and all pass the test fine. I even ran the test against each stick in each of the slots.
Now, when two sticks are put together (any two – take your pick 🙂) the system freezes again. This is typically around the 15 second mark (e.g. Pass 2%, Test 91%, Test3 xx).
From reading around the forums, the best solution offered to others in a similar situation was to up the DRAM voltage by 0.06v. Now on my mobo the only options are 1.8, 1.9 ,2.0, etc. So I upped it to 1.9v with the two sticks inserted.
Running memtest again got this result:

--- before it froze again. (This was further than previously!)
Right, okay I thought, let’s put everything back to “normal”. Well, my machine seemed to have a hippy fit at this – Gets to mobo logo screen and then restarts, again and again. When I did manage to get to the BIOS it started moaning about the voltage being adjusted and then, after putting it back to 1.8v, lots of problems ensued trying to restart windows. After multiple attempts I eventually got the machine back to a useable state.
Now, not being an OverClocking aficionado, I don’t know if the last bit is normal when changing settings. And I really do not a clue as what to do next! Oh, and, my machine keeps pausing– as if the buffer is trying to keep up (wrong terminology I think).
Does anybody have ANY ideas or suggestions?

Should anybody else be experiencing a similar problem, the solution to mine was to reposition the heatsink on the main CPU. My CPU heatsink was ever so slightly touching the Northbridge and pushing it slightly (and I mean ever so slightly - 1mm max) off skew.
Given the fact that the Northbridge used to be called the Memory Controller Hub, I guess this sort of makes sense.
I am just sorry I can't attribute this to the person that suggested it - Unfortunately, I had to visit many forums to find a solution!
