I created a USB boot drive using memtest86 and I have been trying to set the bios up to allow me to boot from the USB drive.

However when I leave the USB drive in it won't let me enter the bios to change the boot order (just hangs on the initial ASUS screen). When I remove the USB I can enter the bios but ofcourse there is no USB drive to select.

I've tried different USB ports and I have tried changing some bios options related to USB booting.

Conundrum.

Configure the bios so it boots first from the usb stick, second from the hdd/ssd and third from whatever, after that let it boot without the usb stick,it will go for the hdd when not finding it,then after powering down insert the usb stick and boot again, see if it boot's from it now.

Also some biosses let you pick a boot device by first clicking a certain "F" key right after booting, see if your motherboard/bios has that option too and maybe try it like that.

Hi Vic. Many thanks for your answer.

Regarding your first paragraph, it is in fact what I am trying to do but I assume I cannot select the USB device from the list in the bios unless it is plugged in. If I plug it in then the bios will not load.

I will try the suggestion in the second paragraph. 🙂

Thanks for all your help Vic. 🙂

In the end it was just a case of waiting five minutes for the ASUS screen to go from "ASUS - doing the Impossible" or whatever their slogan is, to the actualy bios screen and then I just booted from the boot menu. So it had not hung.

For those with a USB boot problem: I got the impression that booting from a USB isn't always as straightforward as perhaps it is imagined. I saw quite a few posts in the various forums where people they had been struggling for hours to sort it out, so don't lose heart.

Some of the resolutions included:

- Use USB 2 not USB 3.
- There are various options you can tinker with in the USB menu,
- I think there is a thing you can switch off called beginning with X and ending with I which has something to do with changing all USB 3 to USB 2.

I thank you.

I know this is old, but I have tried everything and could not boot neither memtest86 nor 86+ from any kind of media.

I'm writing this for anyone still searching the solution, since this thread pops up on first page..

If you set up your boot (basics which you probably already done) to usb/cd/dvd and still nothing, try changing UEFI to legacy mode, this worked for me.

If it still doesn't work for you, look into usb3 usb2 problems with memetest86, 86+, since the info on web points to using usb2, however I managed to boot 86+ from usb3.
