Right now I have a 290X and a 1080p 32" TV sitting on my desk. I badly want higher resolution, faster response time and variable refresh. I'm not at all keen on going down 5" though. I am very intrigued by 21:9 as well.
Here's my current line of thinking: I want to stay single gpu. I tried crossfire and it was hit or miss. If the BL3200PT had freesync with a sensible minimum, it would be end of discussion. I don't think something like that is going to happen while everyone is getting into 4k. The upcoming high res 21:9 screens look like they'll have poor variable refresh performance and push me to buy a Furry X. I doubt even a single Furry X will satisfy me in 4k. My ideal solution in the long run would be whatever is after the next gen cards in two years or so and a 34"ish 4096x2160 VA or IPS with freesync working in a 35 to 75hz+ range. I'm not holding my breath for this, because everyone sucks.
So my obvious choice is to keep waiting with our without the MG279Q on my desk. Basically, do you guys think the awesome specs will cause me to forget the 5" difference and not look back, or will it still feel too small in a month or two? Or do you have some other suggestion? I game a lot, but for fun and immersion more than high level competition and I watch movies on it too (I know size wins there..) Thanks and sorry for the long rant.

In an attempt to answer my own question, I decided to abuse best buys return policy and try out a lesser 27" screen.

Too soon to tell on the size itself, but I seem to be experiencing a lot of eye fatigue. I sort of feel like the 27" size causes me to place the screen right in that in between distance where most people's eyes have a hard time focusing. (I have pretty good eye sight and don't wear glasses.) It could also be that this particular screen is, in all respects, a complete turd. It's a low end Acer, not even sure what model. There are no adjustments to speak of at all. The stand is totally fixed at a slightly weird angle and you can set brightness, contrast and one of 3 equally awful color profiles. The pixels seem a touch fuzzy too..

The thing I'm really wondering about that might be bothering me is flicker. I haven't had much experience with these new fangled Led back lights. People make a big deal about flicker free and I'm sure this doesn't have it. It is at least an IPS... Anyway, do you guys think it's normal that a low end monitor should bother my eyes coming off an old, but high end TV?
