Mic Detected, Not Working

I have a Mic and I've tried both my front panel mic in jack and the pink one on the motherboard. When I plug it in, Realtek HD Audio Manager pops up and I select that the device is "mic in". The mic appears in devices and printer section of the control panel, and also appears in device manager, with fully updated drivers. However, I record and no sound works, nothing is being recorded. I have tried the mic in other computers and it works fine. It's a 3.5mm plug.

No nothing is muted, playback and recording volume are on normal. I just checked it in my other compute running same OS and it worked.

Does the mic have a physical mute switch on it? Make sure it is your default recording device. If you have installed an application like VoiceMeeter, it may have taken over that default.

Yes it does but I have it on off, and if I keep the mic exactly as is right now and switch it over to the other computer, it works.

My motherboard is MSI H81M-E33 if that helps.

Hmmm. Is it the default recording device in Control Panel? If so, it is possible you could have a wiring problem. Unplug your front panel audio connector, and use the rear jack only; see if that works.

Windows updates has a 25MB Nvidia audio driver update actually (seems large for audio), an optional update. Should I do this? This won't interfere with my Nvidia graphics drivers will it?

I feel like that has to do with my audio out not in.

No, it is for sound over HDMI on your nVidia card. It is not related to your problem, unless you're not hearing any sounds (not just no microphone sound), in which case it may have made itself the default sound output device.

Does it make a difference that this is a mic/headset and it's only plugged into the Mic jack, whereas my other PC has a two-in-one jack?

Edit: Yep that's the problem, I guess I need an adapter.

Well then, check the wiring by unplugging your front panel sound from the motherboard, and use the motherboard's mic jack (the pink one).

It's a single plug but it's meant for both audio out and in, since it's a headset and has speakers on it as well as a mic. I don't have a combo jack so I wanted to only use the mic for recording while not being able to use the speakers.

It's a black plug that can also fit in a phone/tablet. I'll have to try unplugging the front panel. But according to https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/R-L-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/How-do-I-get-my-two-jack-headset-microphone-to-work-with-a/ta-p/1035227 what I want to do will not work without an adapter.
