Mic doesn't work

Hello,
I have old pc with windows Me, recently my mic doesn't work with skype, I have headset, brand new and I can hear others but nobody can hear me...my media player works fine.What to do?

Sorry for stating the obvious, but you've plugged in both the jacks, right?

One for the earpiece and one for the microphone.

Also, check other applications. Open up the sound recorder and test there.
Check the volume control, make sure the mic isn't muted.
