mic only picks up loud noises

as the title says my computer can only pic up loud noises. i turned on playback and i could clearly hear my voice but nothing shows up on the green bar unless i blow on the mic. ive tuned the mic levels all the way up to no avail please help
edit: ive updated everything so thats not a solution
